Denver’s Colin Ward has released an insane amount of stuff under his alphabets moniker, but he’s about to get mad exclusive with his output. Future major releases are planned to be released only on Laserpalace, so enjoy the big freebies while you can! Here’s a special preview of two new tracks, a combination of glitchy twerked-up electronics and manipulated pop vocals. Sexy/heavy as only Colin can do it.
This is going to be a Mixtape Weekend! This one is a sweet little mix dedicated to my love of green goodness, early ’90s dance and rave, and some of my fave sounds from the Nows. It’s all about the damn love.
I love starting my weekend with something throbbingly beautiful, and London’s Meddicine is the perfect prescription. Short and violent slabs of industrialized post-punk noise provide the jagged backdrop to composer Monikka’s distorted vocals, echoes of old and new colliding into a body-bruising beauty. Take Tovey’s advice: swallow it. No spoonful of sugar needed.
I go to a lot of different music festivals, but one that really strikes a chord with me is Titwrench. The three-day, all-ages festival is organized by Denver’s Sarah Slater and is focused on women making art and noise. The lineup is fantastic, a veritable who’s-who of noisy girls including Hideous Men, Kevin Shields, Marlo Eggplant, Christina The Hun, and BTS favorite Married In Berdichev, along with 43 other musicians and artists. Even better, there’s helpful workshops that teach you how to build your own noise device, FM transistor radio, and contact microphones, as well as how to run a live PA. So not only do you get to see an amazing DIY concert, you can learn how to start your own as well! I’m dying to go to this one but I’m STILL in Europe on tour; however I if you can make it then GO because it will be one of the best musical experiences you’ll ever have.
I admit to not being overly impressed with Twin Sister’s Vampires With Dreaming Kids EP; I filed it under ‘pleasant’ and moved on. But with their latest 12”, the gorgeously ethereal Color Your Life, they’ve snared my ears and mind completely. Full of melancholic guitars and synths and wistful vocals that could break your heart, it’s the perfect soundtrack to a summer romance. Twin Sister are creating sounds both fresh and timeless, and I can’t wait to hear more.
Do you like things that are amazing? Then you should check out my buddy Colin’s (aka alphabets) new release. This guy cranks out radical music at a startling rate, and his Underwaters series is no exception. Because he’s the coolest cat in Denver, he puts this stuff out for free, but he’s also coming out with a four-cassette collection soon. More info on that when it comes, meanwhile enjoy!
